What I Do for Fun
Just for Fun
Pat Case, author
When I’m not pondering spirituality and the nature of reality, or working on this website, you might find me playing MahJongg or bridge with friends. Or, you might find me working in my garden, admiring my honey bees, or writing another children’s book.
Beekeeping
I became a certified beekeeper after taking the master beekeeper’s program offered at Oregon State University. But after about five years, I found that keeping bees was more of a commitment than I was willing to make.
The bees, though, don’t seem to mind. I still have my hives, and every year, swarms fly in from the nearby orchards and make them their homes.
Here are some photos from when I was actively keeping bees.
Gardening
I never used to think of myself as much of a gardener. But, after transforming my nightmare of a yard into an epicurean wonderland, now I do.
I can now grow enough food in my backyard to feed a family.
I’ve also planted plenty of native habitat to feed the wildlife and native pollinators.
Here are some photos that tell a part of the story.
Writing Children's Books
My beekeeping days inspired me to write a picture book for children about the adventures of an adorable honey bee. I named her AggieBella in honor of my mother, whose name was Agnes. AggieBella flies from place to place in search of nectar. As she does, she teaches a number of good lessons about being kind to bees and to one another.
